Clowns and Clocks © 2002 Lon Jones
a clown fell in love with a clock
he saw her in a store
he liked her ticks and tocks
he took her home and bought her gifts and flowers
he wound her every day
they whiled away the hours

a clown’s love for clocks is renowned
but clocks have no love for clowns

the clock became a part of his act
she played the straight man
her timing was exact
their show went on the road throughout the land
he placed a diamond ring on her second hand

he wined her and dined her
in all the ritzy places
he dreamed of red nosed babies
with numbers on their faces

a clown’s love for clocks is renowned
but clocks have no love for clowns

one day he dropped her while he clowned around
when her case flew open as she landed on the ground
he found out her heart was springs and gears
on his smiling face he painted in some tears

he grew out of circuses
and walking tight rope wire
he left her in a clock shop
some other clown will buy her

a clown’s love for clocks is renowned
but clocks have no love for clowns
