  1. Not Today

From the recording Mandalay

Not Today is an ode to the beta male, a tribe to which I belong. There are many species in which betas have managed to come up with all manner of means to slip in the back door and find a way to contribute to the gene pool, even though, by all means, they shouldn’t EVER get the chance.

It was lovely fun to finally get to work on the groove of this song. I have a live arrangement that I’ve been playing for years, but mapping all the stuff I’ve been playing onto different instruments was just plain juicy.

Lyrics

I have got no money
And I’ve got no fancy clothes
If you ask me where I come from
Well I’d have to say, ‘Who knows?’
Haven’t much to offer you
In any sort of way
That’s what keeps me standing here
But just you watch me someday

I’m gonna walk up to your window
Tap, tap, tap
Someday, one day
Someday soon
But not today

I’ve no way of speaking
That will make you talk to me
I’m just about as average
As an average boy can be
I get my check on Friday
Ho hum, just another day
That’s what keeps me standing here
But just you watch me someday

I’m gonna walk up to your door
Knock, knock, knock
Someday, one day
Someday soon
But not today

I know you’re really trying
But ya gotta listen to Dr. Heyen
Let me tell ya this
You just gotta take some risks
Faint heart never won fair maid
Not how the game is played
So go get brave, get out of your cave
Go talk to that girl!

Well, I finally got some courage
From my old friend Jim Beam
And I’m stumbling down the pathway
To your house down by the stream
I’m just about to knock
I see you kissing my friend Jake
That’s what’s got me running home
But just you watch me someday

I’m gonna run back to your door
Run, run, run
Tap, tap, tap
Knock, knock, knock
Someday, someday
Someday soon
Someday, one day
Next full moon . . .
But not today
