From the recording Rivertown
Neighbor Upstairs
Someday I want all the time back that I’ve spent arguing with those people who live inside my head. They’re noisy and rude at best, and downright obnoxious and so wrong at worst. I don’t know why I listen to their ‘should-a-could-a’ stacked in piles and if-onlys measured in miles.
And don’t get me started about Mr. Regret and his song and dance. When he gets going it sounds like a Riverdance rehearsal.
And I start banging on the ceiling.
Yep, my upstairs neighbors are an unruly lot.
And every now and then they shut up completely. At which point I miss them . . .
Lyrics
The Neighbors Upstairs
The neighbors upstairs
Are making noise again
I'm trying to get some sleep
Gonna drive ‘round the bend
They’re bringing up things
I’d like to forget
All the lost chances
All the regrets
The neighbors upstairs
Are fighting again
And if I speak my piece
They're gonna drag me in
They’ll make their case
And I’ll keep the score
Now I'm in the middle
Of a civil war
And I’m pounding on the ceiling
‘Cause they drove me to the brink
They go stomp, stomp, stomp
Stompity stomp
I go bomp, bomp, bomp
Bompity bomp
They go stomp, stomp, stomp
Stompity stomp
Noisy neighbors
When you gonna stop?
Mr. If-Only
Won'tcha go back home
Miz Shoulda Coulda
Back under your stone
Mr. Regrets
Stop shaking your bones
Oh noisy neighbors
Won't you leave me alone?
The neighbors upstairs
Are so quiet tonight
Now who can I talk to
When the moon is so bright?
I can hear drips
In the kitchen sink
When it gets this quiet
Can’t hear myself think
